Fundraising can be a challenge or it can be an opportunity. Sometimes it is a bit of both.
At some point, most teachers and students consider the possibility of raising extra funds to buy something or go somewhere special. Someone has to figure out how to raise some extra cash.
When you find yourself in that position, we urge you to consider your fundraising carefully.
Think carefully about the true costs of products you might sell.
When you have raised money, spend locally if possible. Model best spending practices.
Buy handcrafted, organic and fairly traded. Avoid cheap plastic garbage.
Fundraising can provide valuable lessons in financial literacy and ethical spending.
To raise funds in environmentally appropriate ways, students can:
- wash cars,
- recycle cans and bottles,
- bag groceries,
- shovel snow or rake leaves,
- start vegetable plants or water gardens,
- bake cookies for a bake sale,
- walk dogs or feed pets,
- sell old toys or sports equipment to younger grades at a school wide toy sale,
- create art from recycled materials and have an art sale,
- sell an environmentally sustainable product,
- exchange pre-loved toys and equipment instead of always having to buy new.
